Knowing the Local Language

Local Language

In Cyprus the official languages of the Country are Greek and Turkish, with the working language in the areas that are controlled by the Cyprus Republic to be Greek or English.

In order to find employment in Cyprus, employers may ask from potential employees to have basic knowledge of the Greek language. In some sectors of the economy (services, tourism and construction for example) the knowledge of the English language can be sufficient at the beginning of the employment period. However effort should be made from all to learn some basic Greek.

English is also widely spoken, therefore if there is at least basic knowledge of English (depending on the kind of job one is required to perform) there will be no significant problem to adapt to the working environment.

Greek lessons are provided regularly by the Ministry of Education and Culture and by other Institution in Cyprus such as Universities, private language schools and some times by Trade Unions. For more information you can contact the Ministry of Education and Culture at tel.: +357-22800931 or at ysea@moec.gov.cy.
